daily letters(daily services)

Public intervention where the artists from daily services (Maria Linares&rosa mesa) offered their services as scribes. The artists offered for free to the passer by a chance to dictate a letter or to write it and they send it on the mail. They try for a week to revitalize the practice of handwriting almost extinguished after the arrival of new technologies. Intervención pública en la que las artistas de daily services (María Linares y rosa mesa) ponen a disposición del público sus servicios como escribientes. Las artistas ofrecen a los transeuntes la posibilidad de enviar una carta escrita a mano a un ser querido de forma gratuita, que ellas llevan al correo.daily services pone a los transeuntes en contacto con la escritura caligráfica y la profesión del escribiente, extinguida ya en casi todo el mundo debido a la expansión de redes digitales de comunicación.

Habalndo con Pepa

Since September 11 2001, the democratic world has seen how civil rights and human rights have been compromise toward a terrosrist free enviroiment. Further in this direction later austerity policies are compromising the rights that generation took long to obtain. This piece done in a popular park in Spain consisted of the lecture of the Human Rights Chapter of the spanish consitution. This articles where modified and converted in little poems that where recite in the streets.This project was done in six editions and taken by multiple artist that collaborate with it. It was realize in Spain (GRan Canaria and Madrid)

Trapos Sucios/Dirty Laundery

When we use the expression “Trapos sucios” in Spanish it relates in one hand to dirty clothes and in the other to secrets…secrets that you do not want anybody to know. The first presentation of this piece in Spain denounce the 1289 rapes that take place in the country every year and that have been communicated to the police and certified for a doctor. The experts believe that they are much more and that this number do not reflect the reality. The silence of all the women that for different reasons (shame, guilt, pain, fear…) could not make a complaint is broken by the ones that can make it. Al over the world this negligible actions take place without a real outcry, hidden under the wait of hundreds of years of patriarchy. Trapos sucios bring to the streets the secret keep in our societies, the secret of a terrible violence against women through the act of the rape. Trapos sucios take the streets to demand to the society to deal with this old and terrible form of violence, to be more aware of this serious problem and more action from our goverments to end once for all with this horrible practice.

Los olvidadosThe forgotten

We are witnessing a crucial historical moment due to the great socio-political and economic changes that are affecting us. This revolution is weakening the foundations of the culture that in some ways lay complacent.
However, reality has once again proven to be more picturesque than fiction and we are perplexedly witnessing radical changes in the pillars of society and culture. It is not difficult to see how there has been a setback in respect for civil rights, citing either security or the need to achieve certain economic objectives.
In any case, there is nothing more disturbing to me than witnessing the inexorable bankruptcy and erosion of the rights recognized in the Fundamental Declaration of Human Rights, which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year.

Performance: "The forgotten ones" 2018Humanity has constantly evolved, with greater or lesser success towards greater tolerance and respect. In our historical-cultural tradition, however, we tend to remember wars and disasters in a generalized manner, and sometimes the celebration and defense events that had proved human being's desire to improve and reach a peaceful and harmonious coexistence are overlooked. For the society that survived the two world wars, the possibility of the massive and cruel destruction of millions of human beings was a difficult reality to digest and even more to explain and prompted not only systemic changes in society and culture but also as all we also know in art (it is not by chance that Dadaism and later postmodernism evolved from its ashes). The Universal Declaration of the Rights of Man responds to a desire not to repeat the barbarism of that era. However, its content is today dragged by governments, organizations and all kinds of conglomerates that either have forgotten the story or try to erase a text that puts some limits that they are not interested in recognizing. This piece presents the Altamira Cave concept as the space of a modern space to create a durational performance that transcribes the text of the Fundamental Human Rights * in a compulsive and methodical way, as the material is written, its ephemeral quality speaks about the fragility, it will deteriorate, fall, and be forgetten ... meanwhile the artist struggles to give firmness and body to a text that she wishes would have more value.*The text we transcribe has an adaptation made with the collaboration of Elena Navarro (lawyer) and my own (Law Degree) in which we intend to refresh the text by collecting topics such as gender equality and excluding possible dangers such as racism, colonialism..

Project “Talking to My Mother”,

Every time I call my mother whether in despair, in worry or in happiness she always answers my questions with the gift of a proverb. For Canary Islands people this is a custom and although my mother does not speak English her wisdom always finds an echo in Canada. Proverbs are universal wisdom. They belong to you if you remember them. They exist only if you pass them to others. This project “Talking to My Mother” is part of my ongoing three year exploration of oral tradition, using proverbs as metaphors for intergenerational communication. I have researched the evolution, forms of transmission and significance of proverbs within different cultures such us the Chinese, English, and Hispanic, using my privilege situation in Chinatown, Toronto. I have an interest in exploring the capacity of the proverb to address socio-cultural issues and their role in transmitting collective values. In the Canary Islands tradition the proverb advises people what to do in a particular circumstance, providing guidelines to any given situation. In our time the disconnection with our ancestors has broken the transmission of this beautiful guide to peoples’ lives. My work seeks to restore proverbs to our collective memory. My first show on the subject was in November 2002 at “Ne Plus Ultra Project”, where I presented proverbs that were common to the English, Spanish and Chinese languages. For the Yugoslav Biennial of Young Artist my project will cross the borders of visual arts and oral tradition in a public space. I intend to use proverbs from the area of the former Yugoslavia. I have been working with members of their community, here in Toronto, researching their oral tradition and having the proverbs translated in English, Spanish and Serbian. I will address proverbs from the former Yugoslavia that talk about multiculturalism, reconstruction, reconciliation, hope and tolerance. For this occasion I will install myself in a public area. The organizers have told me to expect around 100 people per day. I will provide photocopies of my drawings on proverbs in exchange for a proverb. In the night of the opening it will be a stand from which I will donate to the participants who would ask a proverb about an issue that they will feel interest in.

Plaza Jaume Sabartes

The Project This project was done in Ciutat Vella, a centric neighboourhood in Barcelona and it has its starting point in the exploration of the memory and its meaning in the context of a very centric neighbourhood, transformated in the recent years by inmigration and tourism. Through doing some interviews we found out that there was a project of remodelation, in a square, la Plaça Jaume Sabartes, as a project that has ist origin in a desire to extend the Museo Picasso. This urbanistic planning that began in 1996 with the expropiation of the buildings that were in that square is still affecting the neighbours, with such a long process that for many of them is difficult to keep track. We decided then to present in an intervention of 24 hours, the recent memory of the buildings that were expropiated, with the names of the families that lived in those buildings, marking on the floor the plans of the houses and adjudicating them the names of the families who inhabitated them, through maps we found in the City Hall and through the testimony of some of the old neighbours that stayed in the neighbourhood after the expropiation. In the afternoon of that same day and after marking the recent memory we design in the floor the new plan appoved by the City Hall and after we finalized it we talk to the neighbours and public in general presentinfg them with an opportunity to write, draw, or be recorded giving ideas for the new plan in the plaza. All this information was published in the web as part of the III International Games of Efimeral Art in Barcelona and publihed in Argentina, Brasil, Colombia, Italia and Spain. The following images showed the public interventation realized in Barcelona. The project it was divided in three parts. The first part it was realized in the morning and the whole square was marked with white tape, drawing the old buildings that were expropiated in 1996 and writing the names of the familes who used to live on them as well as details of the interior given by old neighbours. The second part of the project was marked with yellow (simbolizing, benches and chairs) and green lines (simbolizing trees). This was the new plan of the City Hall. By the end we have the two plans overimposed. Finally we set up a table in which we exhibit the new project to the neighbours given them the oportunity to participate through drawing or talking to us in the design of the future of the square. Finally we put together a table in which we exhibited the model for the new City Hall’s and we gave a chance to the public and neighbours to give their opinion and to partipate on the design of the new project, through writting, drawing or talking to the cameras.

Gone with the wind

This piece was a multidisciplinary installation in which I combine a public intervention, where I collected adolescent dreams in the streets with video installation and performace. The work was a alegory of the fragility of dreams.

Secrets and puppets

The piece included a performance and public intervention. The artist collected some secrets that she left all over Lisbon in small envelops, the audience could write her back to an email adress and block provided.

daily deluxe

As part of the collective daily services(Maria Linares&rosa mesa) have presented during the Neukoelln 48 Stunden Festival in Berlin, the piece dalily deluxe, a public intervention where people could enjoy a thai massage, a face massage or some hair styling, all for free sitting in our comfortable mobile daily station. Over 100 people enjoy this weekend the project.
